Something I’ve always noticed is that the classic early Old Testament stories feel tired to us. We feel like we’ve heard them a million times before and so we start to think we know those stories like the back of our hands, when we would do well to remember that they always have something new to teach us. When we’re in different seasons of life and different personal situations, these stories speak volumes.
Back in Genesis 4, Cain shockingly murders his own brother, Abel. For those of us with siblings, we know it’s easy to get mad and fight but fratricide is a whole different level. At its core, this is a story about jealousy. Cain, a farmer, offers up his sacrifice, while Abel, a shepherd, offers up his. In the Bible, it states that the Lord had “regard” for Abel’s offering but not for Cain’s. We should attempt to meditate on why Cain’s offering wasn’t enough for God. Was it the amount, the quantity of what was offered? Was it the ripeness or rottenness of the fruit, the quality of what was offered? Or something else entirely? In 1 John 3:12, it states, “We should not be like Cain, who was of the evil one and murdered his brother. And why did he murder him? Because his own deeds were evil and his brother’s righteous.” This verse suggests that it was his heart that was wrong all along. The quantity or quality of his offering might have been a problem but that isn’t the main reason God was upset with him. His offering was the result of a heart that was not contrite and humble. His offering was a reflection of his relationship with God. We can think of the widow who gave all that she had in Mark 12:41-44 as an example that your heart is most important when giving to God. Do we give and tithe with the right attitude?
God even warns Cain in Genesis 4:7, saying, “If you do well, will you not be accepted? And if you do not do well, sin is crouching at the door. Its desire is contrary to you, but you must rule over it.” God’s warning comes soon after Adam and Eve’s original sin so it serves as a reminder to guard your heart against temptation.
As the Hebrews 11:4 verse ends, “Through his faith, though he died, he still speaks,” we’re reminded of how faithfulness and obedience in life rewards us even in the afterlife. Not only are we spending an eternity with our Lord but our testimony continues on affecting those who knew and interacted with us. We are light in the darkness of this world.

Algo que siempre he notado es que las historias al principio del Antiguo Testamento nos cansan. Las hemos oído miles de veces y empezamos a pensar que las conocemos demasiado bien, pero de veras tienen algo nuevo para enseñarnos. Cuando estamos en diferentes temporadas en la vida y diferente situaciones personales, estas historias tienen una palabra para nosotros.
En el capítulo número 4 de Génesis, Caín mata a su propio hermano, Abel. Para cualquiera que tiene hermanos, es fácil enojarse y pelear entre nosotros pero fratricidio es otro nivel completamente diferente. En general, esta historia es una de envidia. Cain, quien cultiva el terreno, ofrece un sacrificio mientras Abel, un pastor de ovejas, ofrece el suyo. En la Biblia dice que a Dios le agradó la ofrenda de Abel pero no la ofrenda de Caín. Debemos meditar en la razón por la cual no le impresionó a Dios su ofrenda. Quizás fue cuanto ofrendo, la cantidad? Quizás fue que tal maduro o podrido estaba su ofrenda, la calidad? O podría ser algo más? En 1 Juan 3:12, dice, “No como Caín, que era del maligno y mató a su hermano. ¿Y por qué causa lo mató? Porque sus obras eran malas, y las de su hermano justas.” Este verso sugiere que era su corazón que estaba mal. Claro, la cantidad o calidad de la ofrenda también podría haber sido un problema pero seguro que no fue la razón principal por como Dios reaccionó a ella. Su ofrenda era resultado de un corazón que no estaba contrito y humillado. Su ofrenda era refleccion de su relación con Dios. Podemos pensar en la viuda que dio todo lo que tenía en San Marcos 12:41-44 como un ejemplo de que el corazón es lo más importante cuando le damos al Señor. ¿Estamos ofrendando o diezmando con la actitud correcta?
Dios advierte a Caín en Génesis 4:7, diciendo, “Si bien hicieres, ¿no serás enaltecido? Y si no hicieres bien, el pecado está a la puerta; con todo esto, a ti será su deseo, y tú te enseñorearás de él. Su advertencia viene despues de el pecado cometido por Adán y Eva y entonces sirve como un recordatorio que debemos guardar nuestros corazones de la tentación.
El versículo en Hebreos 11:4 termina diciendo, “Alcanzó testimonio que era justo, dando Dios testimonio de sus ofrendas; y muerto, aún habla por ella.” Nos recuerda que por nuestra fe y obediencia hay recompensa en el cielo. No solo pasamos la eternidad con nuestro Padre, pero nuestro testimonio continúa afectando esos que nos conocían. Somos luz en la oscuridad de este mundo.
